The Challenge
The founders of Tariffy.club came to us with a bold idea:
Build a platform that helps consumers make informed choices by identifying whether products are truly made in Canada—or simply appear to be.
Their goals were crystal clear but technically ambitious:
Allow users to scan any product barcode and get instant data
Display the country where the company is registered, using official GS1 prefix data
Create a clean, fast, mobile-first interface to support these interactions
Increase trust in Canadian-made goods and promote transparency in retail.
We designed and built an interactive, information-first experience backed by custom code and real-time barcode lookup.
Highlights of our solution:
Barcode Scanner Integration – Using QuaggaJS, we embedded a fully functional barcode scanner directly into the website—no app required.
GS1 Prefix Matching – We wrote a custom logic script that matches scanned barcodes with GS1-registered country ranges and shows:
“Company Registered in [Country]”
Transparency Engine – This feature empowers users to check product claims and verify company origins themselves, building trust with just a tap.
User-Friendly Feedback – The interface reacts instantly, letting users know when a product is verified, and gently flagging gray areas.
Platform: Webflow for layout + embedded custom JS for scanner
Barcode Engine: Powered by QuaggaJS for live scanning
GS1 Dataset: Manually integrated full GS1 prefix database, not just country codes—includes ranges for accurate detection
Responsive Framework: Seamless on mobile, especially where scanning is key
Progressive Enhancements: Graceful fallback UX for devices that don’t support live scanning
Instantly scan barcodes using the device camera, each product is scanned 3 times before showing the results to avoid faulty scans.
